Coffs Harbour held its first race meeting on May 18, 1885. The first race meeting in Coffs Harbour was held on May 18, 1885. Between 400 and 500 people attended. Coffs Harbour Jockey Club wasn’t established until 1908, despite several meetings following the first one. During World War I, special races were held and the profits donated to patriotic charities. The course had grown to 160 acres by 1917 and included a grandstand, an observation tower and a large grandstand. The club and the racing in Coffs declined through the 1930s to the early 1940s. In 1946, a younger generation of racing fans took up the cause to improve the Jockey Club. Through 1947 and 1948, the club and its members underwent extensive improvements, including the construction of new buildings, the improvement of the track and the connection to town’s water. In August 1948, more than 2,600 people attended the first race at the newly redesigned club and track.A.R. Smith won over a distance 7.5 furlongs with Young Garland. By 1952, however, the Club struggled to maintain high attendance figures, and unfortunately, closed between 1956-63.Coffs Harbour Racing Club was able to re-establish itself in the late 1960s after a long history of stops and starts. The Club once offered the largest purse of any Country Racing Club.

Coffs Harbour Racing Club, a two-legged and four-legged club, has been the host to many legendary horses over the years.

The facilities for officials, trainers and the public also improved significantly over the years, with the major refurbishment in 2000 of the grandstand, course and other facilities. The Coffs Coast Racing Club continues to improve and upgrade its facilities. Local businesses and communities are very supportive of the club. Coffs Harbour is growing, expanding and diversifying, and so has the Racing Club. In 2009, the Racing Club installed a Pro-Ride synthetic surface, which was state of the arts.
