Why Geeks Are Here To Stay

What do Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Jack Dorsey have in common? (Besides piles of cash) That’s right; they are all Geeks. Merriam-Webster defines geek as ‘an enthusiast or expert, especially in a technological field or activity: computer geek’. This definition is valid for the famous five above. For instance, Bill’s been fiddling with computers since the 60s, Jeff started by running an online bookstore, Elon loves rockets, Zuckerberg is busy warping our future, and Jack has created the hate-fest called Twitter. Essentially, all have achieved incredible fame, success and wealth by being single-minded, focused and probably obsessive with a particular tech-based idea. So, how did geeks become so mainstream?

The New Geekdom

It’s no wonder we didn’t see it coming. It all happened incredibly quickly. One day in the 80s, we’re innocently enjoying a blockbuster movie about space heroes and Jedi Knights. Next, at the end of the decade, an unknown geek genius called Tim Berners-Lee invented an almost instantaneous worldwide communication protocol called the World Wide Web. Before we know it, we’re all hooked. Plus, some of us become lumbered with stupid old email addresses such as ‘superflyguy2000@hotmail.com (don’t contact me). Next up are these magic talking boxes called mobile phones. Suddenly, by 2000, everyone has one. In fact, you were nobody if you didn’t have a Nokia 3300. Better still, a Blackberry! All this revolutionary interconnectedness is leading to one thing – The New Geekdom.

Beyond Geek-Chic

Geek culture is now mainstream, and we’re all hooked up. Mr Musk claims we’re cyborgs already because of our almost constant attachment to our mobiles. After all, our mobiles are our gateway to all knowledge and communication. So, get ready for the next barrage of tech advances. Strap in because it’s going to get pretty wild! New technology includes AI, 3D printed bones, super realistic holographs, lab-grown meat and dairy, hydrogen planes, hybrid robots and the internet for everyone. But, of course, all this technology requires development, support, maintenance and repair. Yep, the geeks are here to stay; we can’t live without them.
